Moving my personal blog and a new RSS feed URL (goodbye and thanks Micro.blog)
Hey :)
This is just a quick update on this post- RSS feed changes
I’m moving from Micro.blog to a new platform.
- I am going to be moving to a new blogging platform this weekend (for my personal blog). Maybe tonight. It just depends how things go.
- The aeryn.me domain will be moved to the new platform too.
- The new feed URL will be at https://aeryn.me/feed/.
- If you wish to continue to follow this blog in your feed reader, you will need to add it again because I am unable to add feed redirects on the new platform.
- My Micro.blog-hosted site will remain live for some more months whilst I continue migrating posts. But will eventually disappear, I expect.
- I do not intend to delete my account (I want to preserve timeline posts) but will let it lapse back to a free account.
- I will most likely not be posting to Micro.blog anymore. 🤷♀️
- I am now microblogging on Mastodon and still adding Micro.blog folks there gradually. I love that I can continue to follow, although there does feel like some distance now, which is a shame.
- I cross-post from Mastodon to Bluesky too.
Lastly, although I will potentially write about Micro.blog again in the future, I just want to say thank you to Manton, support people, and the community. Thanks for making me feel welcome and being generally a friendly, supportive, and wholesome place.
Bye and see you around
Aeryn x
Edit to add: I think I may have figured out a RSS redirect at the new place. Not sure.
RSS feed changes
Hey,
I am migrating this blog (aeryn.me) to a new platform soon. And all existing RSS feeds will break.
I have set up a feed redirect on the current platform. If you would like to continue to follow my blog, please subscribe this new URL.
The new feed URL will be: https://aeryn.me/feed/
This URL will be the Atom feed address on the new platform, and should be a valid redirect until I complete the move. But I’m not sure all RSS feed clients will happily ‘subscribe’ to a redirect, or not.
So, if you subscribe and you don’t hear anything within a couple of weeks, please check my blog again. I’ll be posting RSS/Atom feed options on the new platform once I’ve moved over.
I’m recovering data (mainly photos) from an old 2008 iMac for a family member. It was supposedly bricked, but it booted up just fine.
I’m copying it all to a flash drive and it’s gonnna take many hours. Then I’ll see if I can convert/restore the Photos.app libraries on my own machine.
I’m annoyed that online accounts send sign-in emails. Having a password is 10000% better. I was unable to sign in to something today because my email service went down. It’s so annoying how that can lock me out of completely unrelated services.
In my quest to find the successor to my Ricoh GR II, I have been researching and considering the Fujifilm X100 VI. Yesterday, to my surprise, I discovered another unexpected possibility in the Leica D-Lux 8. More affordable than the X100! 🤯
It’s difficult to see which could be best for me. 🤔
Q. Where does Mastodon get my profile photo from if I don’t have a Mastodon account? It is using an old Micro.blog photo. Not my new one.
Any help would be appreciated as I would like to know how to update it.
I returned to social media late 2023 after a couple of years away, vowing never to return to the big tech giants for my publishing. It began by rebooting my blog on a different platform. And then slowly I began to embrace the social side of things.
It took a long while for me, after feeling deeply jaded and even suspicious of the internet and the general erosion of the integrity – and increasing hostility – of services I had used for many years.
I joined Bluesky too. And I think it’s a great platform. But the culture there is not for me, generally.
There is no point to this. The end.
Thoughts can end abruptly and that’s fine. It’s time for breakfast anyway.
I fixed my Mac! It had been running weirdly slow recently. Until I switched off Apple AI.
I haven’t really used AI much, ever. Tho it did help me with some regex the other day. So it was useful for that. And when I think I might need it again I can toggle it on for a few minutes.
I needed to contact a dev today for support with an app I recently purchased. But they do that through Twitter. Which I don’t have any more. 🤷♀️
I grabbed a lifetime subscription to Everlog (on sale at £25). I’m going to slowly switch over from Day One.
The only down side is I’m limited by available space in my iCloud account. And I’m assuming this applies to my device too. But I’m not sure about that.
I’ve noticed Reeder sometimes misses occasional posts from Micro.blog. Otherwise I really like it. And I’m hoping for more features down the line. Like a mute list and filtering Bluesky replies.
I quite like Bluesky. But it’s an intense platform generally. I just want a peaceful experience tho, because I’m a delicate flower 🌸
My iPad makes such a good second screen for my MacBook. It’s a better screen for photo editing. In Lightroom I can display images in full screen. But I found that this setup is not compatible with the Magnet app (for window positioning). Exiting Magnet whilst in LR fixes a lot of weirdness.
I think I’ll give the new Reeder app a go. I have been struggling to manage the blogs I follow on Micro.blog. I tried switching a bunch of them to RSS. But that didn’t work out and I’ve been switching them back again. I don’t want to give too much of my time and energy to consuming so I’m not sure what the solution is. Filtering things that are meaningful and helpful to me is a challenge. Maybe this could help 🤷♀️
I’ve been using AirPods Pro for a couple of months now and I was immediately impressed.
This morning I’m listening to Songs from the Big Chair, and I’ve never heard it sound as good as this. I’m hearing detail I’ve never heard before. It’s amazing!
Updating categories on aeryn.me - RSS feed updates
Just a heads up for anyone following this blog by RSS. I’m updating and changing, deleting, and re-organising categories on this blog. Which will affect Category RSS feeds. These may break. I’ve already put in some redirects but maybe I missed, or messed some up. Or will do, as this will be ongoing for a little while.
The only feed that is definitely safe is the main site feed, here:
Today was very busy-
- blood test
- walk in park
- FaceTime with Mum
- coffee with a friend
- building Ikea furniture with my son
- sorting out my new storage
- King of the Hill
- writing this
Also really loving my new AirPods that I got for my birthday. I was sceptical but they’re way better than I expected.
Proton Drive is poop. I’m fed up of the constant friction and sync weirdness. iCloud Drive is 1000% better and mostly reliable.
This has been a moan.
I’m sad to see the Gluon app go. Honestly, I don’t much like the official Micro.blog app and find it’s better to just use the website. 🤷♀️
I’m trying Reeder for my feeds. Tho I’m still using NetNewsWire. I think it will help me to separate some feeds I follow by app, not just by folder.
Other feedy things I’m trying-
- Following more Twitter, Mastodon accounts
- Following more YouTube channels via SiftRSS (to filter out shorts)
I love Micro.blog but sometimes it leans towards chaotic and unexpected.
Someone replied to my blog post by signing into their Bluesky account. But my reply to them was posted to my Bluesky account as a new post and not my hosted website, below their reply.
Very weird and funny. 🤷♀️
